It is amazing to see how far apps for our cell phones have come in the past year; you only have to look at the Apple App Store to see that. 2009 is going to be the year of the App Stores as a number of other companies plan to launch their own versions.
The main player as we know is Apple’s iTunes App Store, and has just had its one-billionth app download. In the first six months 500,000,000 downloads were reached, the other 500,000,000 was achieved in just three months, this proves how popular these application downloads are getting.
Gizmodo has been looking more closely at all the app stores on the market today, along with some of the new players about to launch, such as the Nokia Store Ovi. Other app stores include, Android App market, BlackBerry App World, Windows Mobile Market Place and Palm Catalog.
All of these are unique in their own way, but they certainly have a lot of ground to cover if they wish to catch up to Apple’s iPhone App Store.
